The complete etymology of the Pseudemydura genus (Pleurodira:Chelidae)

Introduction

Chelodina      Elseya      Elusor      Emydura      Macrochelodina      Pseudemydura      Rheodytes

Pseudemydura (Siebenrock, 1901)

The generic name is derived from the Greek pseudes (false) and the generic name Emydura and suggests this genus resembles the Emydura genus but is different. In the original description, Siebenrock (1901) wrote "This genus is closest related to Emydura Bonep. But differs from it by its markedly narrower jaw, by the large size of the plastron and by the small size and position of the humeral scutes". Its grammatical gender is feminine. The genus name Pseudemydura was erected by Friedrich Siebenrock (1853-1925) of the Museum of Natural History in Vienna, an Austrian herpetologist and the curator of the ichthyologic and herpetological collection of the Museum of Natural History in Vienna from 1919 to 1920.

Pseudemydura umbrina (Siebenrock, 1901)

The original description of the species in German made by Siebenrock in 1901 states: "Rückenschild und Oberfläche des Kopfes umbrabraun gefärbt, Plastron schmutzig gelblichgrün, alle Nähte braun; Gliedmaßen und Halsrücken dunkelbraun." Translated to English: Dorsal scutes and surface of the head dull brown (umbrabraun) colored, plastron dull yellowish-green, all sutures brown; limbs and back of neck dark brown. The specific epithet was derived from the Latin umbra (shade, shadow) and refers to the carapace and the head having a brownish color. Its grammatical gender is feminine. The species was described by Friedrich Siebenrock in 1901.
