Comment: Peter A. Ouwens, who originally described the species as Emydura branderhorsti in 1914, was a Dutch scientist and a director of the Java Zoological Museum and Botanical Gardens in Bogor. This short description was the first record of Elseya branderhorsti. Jan Matiaska (2005).

b. still aliv. Sth. Nw. Guinea Dr. BRANDERHORST
Shell convex, l. 382 mm, br. 281 mm, oval with a
linear vertebral groove; nuchal shield absent.
Plastron l. 330 mm, bridge width 145 mm, two pairs
of barbels; one smal, one big.
Dark green brown above, yellow inferiroly, soft
part gray, a yellow band from the symphysis of
the jaws till below the tympanum.
